What happened in Weimarer Land
The village of Thangelstedt, near the town of Blankenhain in Thuringia, was hit hardest, left badly battered by the passing supercell.1 A supercell is a particularly severe, long-lived thunderstorm marked by a rotating updraft.1
The towns of Blankenhain and Bad Berka, both in Thuringia, were especially affected.7 Trees were blown down, roofs were torn off and streets were flooded during the heavy rain, hail and hurricane-force gusts.7 Power supply was temporarily cut off in the area.7
Emergency crews in the region also reported trees toppling on Monday evening, roofs being stripped, and access roads blocked.1 The roof of a riding hall was partly torn off, and a playground was destroyed, according to a spokesperson for the regional emergency coordination center.1
DWD investigates possible tornado
The DWD said it is now looking into reports of a possible tornado to help determine which wind phenomena actually occurred.1 The agency has not yet confirmed whether a tornado touched down.1
The DWD had issued a severe weather warning for parts of Thuringia on Monday, cautioning residents about severe thunderstorms.2 Officials confirmed that the storms caused considerable damage in some parts of Thuringia.2
Warnings continue into midweek
The threat of severe weather is not over. The DWD warned that thunderstorms with heavy rain, storm gusts and hail were also possible on Tuesday and into the night heading into Wednesday.2
An active severe thunderstorm alert from the DWD covers the city of Erfurt, the city of Weimar, and the districts of Weimarer Land, Gotha, Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and Ilm-Kreis, all in Thuringia.6 The alert warns of severe thunderstorms with gale- or storm-force gusts, very heavy rain and hail.6
A weather system approaching from the south is drawing in a hot, thunderstorm-prone air mass over Germany, moving ahead of a low-pressure system positioned over Great Britain.4 The DWD's latest update, issued Tuesday evening, flagged isolated thunderstorms with heavy rain and storm gusts moving into the region overnight into Wednesday.4
Extreme heat stress is also expected on Tuesday, with strong heat stress continuing into Wednesday.4
Cleanup continues
Recovery crews in the southern Weimarer Land district are still working to clear debris and restore normal conditions after the supercell's passage.1,9 Fallen trees blocked access roads in multiple locations, complicating cleanup efforts.1
